1. Mechanical Properties
- Extremely high hardness (Mohs hardness 9.2–9.5)
- Excellent abrasion resistance and scratch resistance
- High compressive strength and good fracture toughness
- Sharp particle edges, ideal for cutting and grinding
2. Thermal Properties
- Outstanding thermal conductivity
- Low coefficient of thermal expansion
- Excellent thermal shock resistance
- High melting point (~2730 °C, sublimates under normal pressure)
- Stable performance under continuous high-temperature conditions
3. Chemical Properties
- Excellent chemical inertness; resistant to erosion by most acids, alkalis and molten metals at room temperature
- Does not react with carbon, silicon and many non-ferrous metals under high temperature
- Good oxidation resistance below 1300 °C; forms protective silica film on surface when oxidized
- Insoluble in water and common organic solvents

Applications of Silicon Carbide Powders
- Abrasive & Polishing Industry
Black and green silicon carbide powders are used for grinding, polishing and cutting of metal, glass, stone, silicon wafers and hard alloys. They can be made into abrasive papers, grinding wheels, polishing slurries and blasting media.
- Advanced Ceramic Manufacturing
SiC powder serves as raw material for sintered silicon carbide ceramics. The finished ceramic parts are applied in mechanical seals, nozzles, heat exchangers, bearing components and high-temperature structural parts due to high temperature resistance and anti-corrosion performance.
- Metallurgy & Refractory Materials
As high-performance refractory raw materials, silicon carbide powders are added to refractory bricks and castables for industrial furnaces. They also act as deoxidizers and alloy additives in steel smelting to improve alloy quality.
- Photovoltaic & Semiconductor Industry
High-purity silicon carbide powder is adopted for silicon wafer cutting and surface polishing. Ultra-fine and nano-grade SiC powder is an important raw material for producing third-generation semiconductor silicon carbide substrates.
- New Energy & Energy Storage
It is used as thermal conductive filler for lithium battery thermal management materials. In addition, SiC powder can be applied in composite materials to enhance thermal conductivity and mechanical strength of battery modules.
- Composite Materials
SiC powder is used as reinforcing filler in polymer, metal and ceramic matrix composites, effectively improving wear resistance, thermal conductivity and dimensional stability of composite products.
- Chemical Engineering
With outstanding corrosion resistance, silicon carbide powder can be used to manufacture anti-corrosion coatings and chemical reaction components working under harsh acid and alkali environments.
