Green Silicon Carbide (GC) for Paints & Coatings
Green silicon carbide (GC SiC) micron powder is a high-performance functional filler widely applied in industrial paints and protective coatings.
Key Properties
- Mohs hardness: 9.4–9.5, harder than alumina and quartz powder
- True density: 3.20 g/cm³; pale green powder appearance
- Excellent chemical inertness: resistant to acids, salt mist, alkalis and organic solvents at ambient temperature
- Outstanding heat resistance: continuous service temperature up to 1200–1600 °C
- High purity grade for coatings: SiC ≥ 98.5%–99%; low iron oxide and free carbon to avoid discoloration or black specks in light-colored coatings
Green silicon carbide features higher purity, superior hardness and cleaner color, making it more suitable for topcoats and light-tone coating systems. Black silicon carbide is tougher and lower-cost, mainly used for dark heavy-duty intermediate coats.
Main Functions in Coatings
- Improve abrasion resistance and scratch resistance Hard SiC particles form a rigid skeleton inside the film, effectively reducing wear and extending service life of floor coatings and machinery protective paints.
- Enhance anti-corrosion performance Fill tiny voids in resin matrix, block penetration of water, salt and corrosive media for heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings, pipeline coatings and marine coatings.
- Provide thermal stability and thermal conductivity Ideal for silicone high-temperature resistant coatings, flue anti-corrosion coatings and thermally conductive functional coatings.
- Deliver anti-slip effect Proper particle grades create micro-protrusions on coating surface for anti-slip deck paints and floor coatings.
- Increase film hardness and electrical insulation Applicable to insulating anti-corrosion coatings. Ultra-fine grades maintain good leveling and avoid excessive matte effect.
Common Particle Size Selection
- 400# – 800#: Abrasion-resistant epoxy intermediate coats, anti-slip floor paints, heavy-duty primers, high-build coatings; strong abrasion resistance, matte finish
- 1000# – 2000#: General abrasion-resistant topcoats, PU anti-corrosion paints, marine deck paints; balanced abrasion resistance and surface smoothness
- 2500#, 3000#, 5000# ultra-fine powder: Fluorocarbon coatings, UV curable coatings, high-end transparent abrasion-resistant topcoats. Easy to disperse and less likely to cause surface scratches; compatible with semi-gloss and high-gloss systems.
