Black Silicon Carbide Main Application

Black silicon carbide is primarily used as an abrasive and a refractory material due to its exceptional hardness, sharpness, and thermal stability. Its key advantage over greener, purer silicon carbide is its higher toughness and lower cost, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Main Applications

1. Abrasives & Cutting Tools (Primary Use)

This is the largest application area. Black SiC is crushed into grains of various sizes to manufacture tools for grinding, cutting, and polishing.

  • Cutting & Slicing: Used in resin-bonded or vitrified cutting wheels and blades for cutting hard materials like stone, concrete, ceramics, glass, and non-ferrous metals.

  • Grinding: Used in grinding wheels for snagging (rough grinding) of cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and for cleaning and deburring metal parts.

  • Coated Abrasives: Used in the production of sandpaper, sanding belts, and discs for woodworking, metal finishing, and automotive repair.

  • Blasting & Lapping: Used for sandblasting to clean metal surfaces and for free abrasive lapping of hard materials.

2. Refractories

Black SiC’s high thermal conductivity, excellent thermal shock resistance (resistance to rapid heating and cooling), and hardness make it a key component in high-performance refractories.

  • Kiln Furniture: Used to make beams, setters, and saggers in furnaces for ceramic, tile, and sanitaryware production. These components last longer under high temperatures and cycling.

  • Lining Materials: Used as a wear-resistant lining in blast furnaces (iron making), ladles, and incinerators.

  • Specialty Refractories: Used in parts for the cement and non-ferrous metal smelting industries.

3. Metallurgical Additive

In the foundry and steelmaking industries, black SiC is used as a source of silicon and carbon.

  • Deoxidizer: Acts as a powerful deoxidizer in steel production, helping to remove oxygen and improve steel quality.

  • Inoculant / Carburizer: Added to molten iron in foundries to promote the formation of graphite (graphitization), improving the strength and quality of cast iron parts. It also serves as a carburizer to increase carbon content.

4. Engineering Ceramics & Components

For applications requiring extreme wear resistance, it is sintered to form durable ceramic components.

  • Seal Rings & Bearings: Used in mechanical seals and bearings for pumps that handle abrasive slurries.

  • Wear Parts: Used for nozzles, liners, and burner nozzles in mining and industrial equipment.
