Black silicon carbide application

Black silicon carbide (SiC) is a synthetic material with high hardness, high wear resistance, high temperature resistance and excellent chemical stability. It is mainly made of quartz sand, petroleum coke and other raw materials smelted in a high-temperature electric furnace. It has a wide range of uses, covering multiple industrial fields. The following are the main applications:

1. Abrasives and cutting tools

– Abrasive materials: Black silicon carbide is widely used in the manufacture of grinding wheels, sandpaper, grinding heads, etc. due to its high hardness (Mohs hardness 9.2). It is suitable for grinding low-strength materials such as glass, ceramics, stone, and cast iron.
– Cutting tools: As a raw material for cutting discs, it is used in stone processing, metal cutting and other fields, especially suitable for cutting brittle materials.

2. Refractory materials
– High-temperature industrial applications: The high temperature resistance of black silicon carbide (melting point is about 2700℃) makes it an ideal material for kiln linings, refractory bricks, and castables. It is used in high-temperature equipment in metallurgy, ceramics, glass and other industries.
– Corrosion resistance: Excellent performance in high temperature and chemical corrosion environments (such as steelmaking furnaces).

3. Wear-resistant and impact-resistant parts
– Industrial wear-resistant parts: Used to manufacture mechanical seal rings, sandblasting nozzles, mud pump parts, etc., suitable for harsh environments such as mining and chemical industries.
– Bulletproof materials: Due to high hardness and impact resistance, it can be combined with other materials for protective equipment.

4. Electronics and semiconductor fields
– Electronic component substrate: Although the purity is lower than that of green silicon carbide, black silicon carbide is still used to manufacture electric heating elements (such as resistance heating rods), circuit board heat dissipation substrates, etc.
– Semiconductor auxiliary materials: In the photovoltaic industry, it is used as abrasive slurry for silicon wafer cutting to improve cutting efficiency.

5. Ceramics and composite materials
– Reinforcement materials: As an additive for ceramic or metal-based composite materials, it improves the strength, wear resistance and high temperature resistance of the material and is used in aerospace, automotive brake pads, etc.

6. Chemical and environmental protection fields
– Corrosion-resistant equipment: used for reactors and pipeline linings to resist strong acid and alkali corrosion.
– Filter materials: used as filter media in high-temperature flue gas treatment, such as dust collector filter elements.

7. Other applications
– Jewelry processing: used for cutting and polishing gemstones.
– Coating materials: used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant coatings on metal surfaces.

Difference from green silicon carbide
Black silicon carbide has a lower purity (about 95%-98%) and a lower cost, and is suitable for scenarios with low purity requirements; green silicon carbide has a higher purity (≥99%) and a slightly better hardness, and is mainly used for precision processing of cemented carbide, semiconductor chips, etc.

In short, black silicon carbide plays an important role in industrial manufacturing, new materials, energy and other fields with its unique properties, and is a key material for improving efficiency and durability.
