Black Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a synthetic abrasive material produced by the high-temperature reaction of silica sand and petroleum coke in an electric resistance furnace. It is one of the hardest synthetic abrasives, with a Mohs hardness of 9.1-9.3, making it ideal for grinding, cutting, and polishing applications.
Applications of Black Silicon Carbide:
Abrasive Tools: Used in grinding wheels, sandpapers, and blasting media for metals, ceramics, and stone.
Refractory Materials: Added to refractory bricks for improved thermal shock resistance.
Metallurgical Use: Acts as a deoxidizing agent in steel production.
Lapping & Polishing: Used in precision finishing of hard materials like tungsten carbide.
Anti-Slip Surfaces: Incorporated into coatings for floors and pavements.
Semiconductor & Electronics: High-purity SiC is used in electronics due to its semiconductor properties (though black SiC is typically less pure than green SiC).
